Capacity Breakout I: The Power of the Intersection of Prevention and Recovery

Enhance North Carolina’s SA Prevention and Recovery System’s capacity to address nonmedical prescription drug use by increasing working partnerships between prevention and recovery among state agencies and local communities to promote healthy communities, address risk and protective factors, promote recovery initiatives. Both systems share many common goals. This grant will be used to promote joint planning, system support, and initiatives that leverage and maximize efforts to prevent, reduce and recover from opioid use disorders. At the state level, leadership will be recruited with expertise in both SA Prevention and Recovery to lead joint initiatives. At the local level, high need counties will be selected and sub-recipient communities that will receive tailored TA/mentoring from a cohort of prevention professionals with expertise in opioid prevention and recovery professionals to assist communities in planning initiatives that address common prevention and recovery goals. At the state and local level, prevention and recovery will serve side by side on collaborative boards, assist with the planning and implementation process of the STR grant, and coordinate collaborative meetings. In addition, sub-recipient communities will be required to jointly plan and implement key activities that promote both prevention and recovery in at least one of the following areas: Jointly participate in data driven planning to strengthen infrastructure of prevention and recovery; Building recovery capital & promotion of asset building in the personal, familial, or community realm; Deploying effective strategies to promote community level change to increase supports, change community policy or norms, or reduce stigma; Jointly plan services that target transitions and times of vulnerability for persons age 12-25; Plan and launch education and advocacy efforts to increase awareness of challenges and opportunities to prevent and recover from opioid use disorders; and Provide leadership opportunities to future prevention and recovery leaders through participation in the State’s Leadership Development Academy.
About Erin
Erin is the Director of the Wilson County Substance Prevention Coalition. She is the Co-Director of the North Carolina Lock Your Meds Campaign. She has worked with the Wilson County Coalition for 10 years in the prevention of substance use disorders among young people. Her work has been specifically focused on preventing underage alcohol use & of-age over consumption and prescription drug misuse through environmental strategies and community based processes. Erin has a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.A. Religion & Philosophy from Barton College. She has lived in Wilson for 15 years, has a husband named Aaron, and two children, Audrey (5) & Axel (3).
